Expect Things to Break

This sounds pessimistic but it is freeing. Everything breaks eventually. The question is not if, but when. Accepting that truth removes panic when things malfunction.

The Weekly Reset

Set aside 30 minutes every week for household maintenance. Sunday afternoon works well. Check these items:

  • Filters: HVAC, range hood, water filter
  • Appliances: Clean dryer vent, empty dishwasher filter
  • Surfaces: Wipe down counters, sweep floors

This is not deep cleaning. This is preventive upkeep.

The Emergency Kit

Keep basic repair supplies handy. You do not need to be a DIY expert. Just have these items ready:

  • Flashlight with extra batteries
  • Screwdriver set (Phillips and flathead)
  • Electrical tape
  • Extension cords
  • Batteries (AA and AAA)

When something breaks, you can often fix it immediately instead of waiting for help.

Documentation

Create a folder for appliance manuals, warranty information, and purchase receipts. Digital or paper, your choice. Label it clearly. When you need the info, you will thank yourself for organizing it now.

Plan for it. Maintain it. Stress less about it.
